How data free betting works in South Africa
Data free betting means you can open a bookmaker, log in and place a bet when your data bundle is finished and your airtime is at zero. Each bookmaker sets it up a little differently, some with a separate website and some with an app, and few of them spell out which parts of the product stay free.
This guide covers who pays for the data, the two ways bookmakers deliver it, how to tell you are on the free version, how to sign up and install an app, and the things that still cost you data. It draws on the six data free bookmakers we have reviewed on this site, each read on its own pages as a phone on a South African connection in September 2026.
Who pays for the data
The data still has to be paid for, and with data free betting the bookmaker pays the network for it instead of you.
It works through reverse billing, where traffic to the bookmaker’s data free site or app is charged to the business rather than to your airtime or bundle. Hollywoodbets’ data free address runs on Datafree Technologies, a zero rating platform whose own site says a service on it stays reachable when a user has zero airtime and zero data, comes at no cost to the user and does not rely on their SIM, airtime or data bundle. That is why an empty phone can still get you onto a data free site to place a bet.
The data free versions we read concentrate on betting: odds, bet slips and your account. None of them says video is covered, and each bookmaker handles casino games differently, as the sections below show.
Which networks it works on
Datafree Technologies, the platform behind Hollywoodbets’ data free site, says it is reverse billed across all major South African networks. None of the six bookmakers’ own data free pages we read names the networks its offer runs on, so there is no network-by-network list to go by.
If you are on a smaller network, or on a new SIM, open the data free version once with an empty balance before you rely on it. If it loads with nothing on the phone, it works for you on that network.
Data free site or data free app
Bookmakers deliver data free betting in one of two ways, as a separate website or as an app, and the choice decides whether you need to install anything and which phones you can use.
A data free website
Some bookmakers run a separate version of their site at its own address, served so that it does not use your data. There is nothing to install and nothing takes up space on your phone, because you type the address or follow a link and you are in.
- Hollywoodbets: www.datafree.hollywoodbets.net, which tells you on screen “You are now in Free Mode”
- Interbet: datafree.interbet.co.za
- Betfred: datafree.betfred.co.za
All three data free sites carry sport, horse racing and live betting. Interbet’s adds the Tote and its Soccer 6 zone, Betfred’s links to SkyPilot and Lotto & Numbers, and Hollywoodbets’ Free Mode menu lists Lucky Numbers, Aviator and Shooting Star.
A data free app
Other bookmakers make the app the data free product. You install it once, and the betting inside the app is then meant to run without touching your data.
- Betway: its own app page calls the app data free and offers it as an Android APK from Betway’s site, on the App Store and on Huawei AppGallery
- Supabets: its download page calls the app data free and offers it as a direct Android APK and on the Apple App Store, with Huawei AppGallery listed as coming soon
- Easybet: a data free Android app, reached through a data free landing page at easybet.freeurl.co.za
- Hollywoodbets: its Free Mode page also carries a Hollywoodbets App download banner, alongside the website
With an app, the download comes first. Easybet’s own page says no data is used for its download, while the other bookmakers’ download pages we read do not say the download is free, so fetch their app on wifi if you can.
If you have an iPhone, Betway and Supabets both list an App Store app, and a data free website works in your phone’s browser with nothing to install. How to tell you are on the free version
Every bookmaker also has a normal site that uses your data, and the data free version can look almost the same, so check which one you are on before you bet.
- Check the address. On the three data free websites it starts with datafree, or www.datafree on Hollywoodbets. The plain address, such as betfred.co.za, is the normal site.
- Look for the label. Interbet puts Data Free in its page title, Betfred shows a DataFree logo and the words Betfred Data Free on the page, and Hollywoodbets tells you on screen that you are now in Free Mode.
- Watch for the warning. Easybet marks its main website “This is NOT Data Free”, so you know when you have left the free version.
- Bookmark it. Once you have the right address saved, you go straight in every time and avoid landing on the normal site by mistake.
Logging in and signing up without data
None of the data free sites we read asks you to open a separate data free account. Hollywoodbets’ Free Mode page, Interbet’s data free site and Betfred’s data free site each show a Login button beside Register or Sign Up, and Easybet’s install steps end with opening the app to sign up or log in, so you use the account you already have.
On Hollywoodbets the Login button sits inside Free Mode, so reaching it costs nothing, and the same screen carries a Change Password or Cell Number link you can use on a flat balance. Its Free Mode Info and Help menu also holds How To Register, FICA and How To Make A Deposit pages, so you can read the help without data.
Opening a new account without data depends on the bookmaker. Hollywoodbets, Interbet and Betfred all show a Register or Sign Up button inside the data free site, and Easybet’s data free app lets you sign up once it is installed. On the others you may need to set the account up on the normal site first, which uses data.
FICA and verification
You must be 18 or older, and the two bookmakers whose verification help we read both ask for documents. Hollywoodbets’ registration help, which you can read inside Free Mode, says the law requires you to hand in FICA documents, a copy of your ID, before it activates your account, and you can hand them in at any Hollywoodbets branch, fax them or email them. Betway’s FAQ says FICA law requires it to collect a copy of your ID and proof of residence from each customer. If Betway cannot verify your ID automatically when you register, you email it a copy, and it activates the account once the ID is checked, which can take up to 24 business hours. Proof of residence is usually asked for later, when you request a withdrawal.
What still costs you data
Of the pages we read, Easybet’s data free page is the only one that says what sits outside the free version, so check the parts below on your own balance before you rely on them.
Deposits and withdrawals
Interbet’s and Betfred’s deposit pages both open inside their data free sites. Interbet’s lists EFT, card, vouchers, Ozow instant EFT and walk-in bank deposits, with a 1.9% administration fee on credit card deposits and a limit of R3,000 a day by OTT Voucher. Betfred’s lists EFTs, card payments, vouchers and cash, and its data free menu also links to Deposit Methods and Withdrawal Methods pages. Hollywoodbets’ Free Mode help menu lists withdrawal terms for 1Voucher, ShopriteMMA, Spot Money and the 1ForYou app. Betway’s FAQ gives i-Pay and SiD instant bank transfers, Visa and Mastercard and OTT Voucher, plus EFT with FNB, ABSA, Standard Bank and Nedbank. None of these pages says whether the payment step itself is zero rated, so check your data balance after your first deposit or withdrawal, or pay in and cash out while you are on wifi.
Video and live streaming
Betway’s app page and Supabets’ download page both list live sports streaming among their app’s features, and neither says streaming is part of the data free offer. None of the data free pages we read from the six bookmakers says video is covered, so assume watching costs data.
Casino games
Each bookmaker handles casino games differently. Easybet says directly that slots and live dealer games only work on its main website and not the data free app. Hollywoodbets’ Free Mode menu lists Aviator and Shooting Star beside the sport, with tiles for Wheel Of Wonder, Zama Fruits, Plinko, Gold Rush and more instant games further down the page. Betfred’s data free site links to Casino & Slots and Live Casino, but its slots lobby loads from a separate games address, and we could not confirm whether those games are zero rated without signing in. Betway’s app page says its full casino, with Aviator, slots, table games and live casino, is in the app, without saying which of it is data free.
“Light data use” is not data free
Betway’s app page invites you to download its data free app and, on the same page, lists light data use among the app’s features and calls some of its quick casino games data saving. Supabets’ download page uses the same words. Light data use means the app draws less from your bundle, which is a different promise from zero rating, where nothing comes off it. Neither page says which parts of the app are zero rated, so read light data, data saving or data friendly as cheaper rather than free, and trust your balance over the headline.
Leaving the free version by mistake
Hollywoodbets’ Free Mode page has a FULL SITE button at the top of its menu and a Go To Full Website link at the bottom, and both lead to the full Hollywoodbets website, the normal site that uses your data. If you land there by mistake, go back to www.datafree.hollywoodbets.net before you place your next bet.
How to check it is working
The surest check is a test on your own phone and your own network, and it takes a few minutes.
- Note your data and airtime balance before you start.
- Open the bookmaker’s data free site or app and check you are on the free version.
- Log in, look through the odds and place a small bet.
- Check your balance again. If nothing has moved, the free version works on your network.
- If something did come off, think back to what you opened, starting with any deposit page, video or casino game.
Getting the app safely
Betway and Supabets both say real money gambling apps are not allowed on the Google Play Store, so Android users download an app file, called an APK, from the bookmaker’s own site. Your phone will ask for permission to install it, and Betway tells Android users to enable Allow Unknown Sources if the install fails, so that prompt is a normal step.
Installing a data free APK step by step
Easybet’s data free landing page at easybet.freeurl.co.za gives these steps for its Android app:
- Go to Settings on your Android phone and tap Security.
- Under Device Administration, tick the box next to Allow Unknown Source.
- Tap OK in the box that appears to save the change.
- Tap the Download App button, which fetches easybet.apk from Easybet’s own easybetapp.freeurl.co.za address.
- Install the app onto your phone.
- Once it is installed, tap Open and sign up or log in.
What is not safe is getting that file from anywhere other than the bookmaker. Steer clear of APK download sites, links passed round on WhatsApp or Telegram, and anything calling itself a faster or unlocked version, because someone can change a file before it reaches you without you being able to tell. Lookalikes also turn up in the Play Store: a search for Betway there from South Africa shows Betway Scores first, a news, scores and stats app rather than the betting app.

Betfred’s data free home page shows its welcome offer headline, marked New customers only and T&Cs apply, and has a Promotions page in its menu. Easybet’s main site lists a first deposit match and a sign up bonus among its welcome offers, and Hollywoodbets’ Free Mode page carries its Soccer Punters Challenge and a Promotions link. We do not list bonus amounts on this site because bookmakers change them often, so open the promotions page on the data free version and read the minimum deposit, the playthrough and the time limit before you claim anything.
